HHS-OIG has approximately 1,600 employees dedicated to government oversight, combating fraud, waste and abuse and to improving the efficiency of HHS programs. A majority of the OIG's resources goes toward the oversight of Medicare and Medicaid.

HHS-OIG, in consultation with the Attorney General, determines whether states have false claims acts that qualify for an incentive under section 1909 of the Social Security Act.
