Cyberattacks on Taiwan government departments doubled in 2024 from the previous year to an average of 2.4 million attacks a day, the island's National Security Bureau said, adding most of them were launched by Chinese cyber forces.

Taiwanese authorities have claimed that a China-linked ship entered its waters and damaged a subsea cable. As reported by local media, four fibers of a Chunghwa Telecom-operated subsea cable were damaged off the coast at Yehliu, New Taipei City, on January 3, 2025.

Taiwan's defence ministry said on Thursday that Chinese warplanes and warships had carried out the first "combat patrol" around the island of the New Year, after Taiwan President Lai Ching-te again expressed willingness to talk to Beijing.

China routinely denies being involved in hacking attacks but is frequently accused by foreign governments, especially the United States which last week said Chinese hackers stole documents from the US Treasury Department.

China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and for years has been ramping up military, diplomatic and political pressure on the island to accept its claims of sovereignty. Taiwan says cyberattacks have also increased as Beijing uses a range of "grayzone" methods to harass the islan— tactics that fall short of an act of war.
