Jean-Marie Le Pen, an unabashed nationalist and founder of the French far-right National Rally party, has died aged 96, sources close to his daughter Marine Le Pen said on Tuesday.

A Holocaust denier and unrepentant extremist on race and immigration, the far-right politician has died at 96.

Mr Le Pen's long political career was all about belligerence, anger, regret and scapegoats - but it would be wrong to write him off as merely an agitator.

He co-founded what became France’s biggest opposition party, National Rally, rooted in deep anti-immigrant sentiment.
