Before Helene, that part of his Henderson County farm had been lined with thousands of Granny Smith and Gala apple trees, which had only matured enough to produce a commercially viable amount of fruit. Hurricane Helene was a historic storm that will be on the minds of those affected for years to come. During the evening of Sept. 26, the storm made landfall along Florida’s Big Bend area as a category 4 with wind speeds of 140 mph.

Thirteen people were killed in the flooding and landslide that resulted, including 11 members of the Craig family.
