The MTA is reminding drivers to update their E-ZPass accounts before congestion pricing starts this weekend. The toll goes into effect on Jan. 5. Drivers entering Manhattan at and below 60th Street will pay a $9 toll once a day between the hours of 5 a.

New York City congestion pricing will start this weekend as planned, MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber declared Monday, despite a New Jersey judge earlier in the day partially siding with some who sought to delay it.

As the final hours of 2024 ticked away, the metropolitan region’s commuters waited with bated breath to see whether more clarity would be provided about a federal judge’s decision on the merits of a case brought by New Jersey to upend congestion pricing.

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it will begin congestion pricing tolling on Sunday despite New Jersey officials claiming that a U.S. district judge's ruling disallows the plan.

Unless NJ Gov. Phil Murphy can convince a judge to bolster a recent ruling, NY plans to begin congestion tolling.

“We welcome the court’s ruling today in the congestion pricing lawsuit. Because of New Jersey’s litigation, the judge has ordered a remand, and the MTA therefore cannot proceed with implementing the current congestion pricing proposal on Jan. 5, 2025,” said Randy Mastro, the attorney representing New Jersey in the case.

New Jersey asked a federal judge to block New York from moving forward this weekend with a plan to charge drivers entering Manhattan’s central business district while a legal challenge plays out.

After reviewing Federal Judge Leo Gordon's ruling to stop New York City congestion pricing, the MTA says it plans on putting the tolling plan into effect on Sunday. However, attorneys representing New Jersey are saying Monday's opinion is actually a victory for the Garden State.
