Sirens sounded across the country and some Israeli citizens were urged to seek shelter in protected areas. Most of the missiles were intercepted, but "several hits were identified, and the damage is being assessed," an Israeli security official said.

Israel announced an expansion of its week-long ground offensive in Lebanon on Tuesday after conducting airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut overnight. The Israeli military said it was conducting ” limited, localised, targeted operational activities " inside southwestern Lebanon against Hezbollah sites, using its reserve division.

Israeli troops are now entering south-west Lebanon - until now, the invasion had focused on the eastern side of the border.
