The Department of Housing and Urban Development (Hud) said Friday that more than 770,000 people were in shelters, temporary housing or had no shelter, according to a survey carried out one night in January 2024.

The rise was driven by unaffordable housing, inflation, systemic racism, natural disasters and rising immigration.

The number of people experiencing homelessness topped 770,000, an increase of more than 18 percent over last year and the largest annual increase since the count began in 2007, the federal government reported today.
