On the East Coast, a similar discovery was made at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York, according to the agency. Inside a package from Japan, agency specialists found six live beetles hidden in food packages on Jan. 16, the agency’s Office of Field Operations said in a Feb. 3 news release.

Agriculture specialists assigned to the airport discovered 37 live beetles hidden inside packages of Japanese snacks, chocolate, and potato chips, the CBP said. The contraband was discovered during a physical examination of a shipment arriving from Japan via air cargo last month. The items are valued at $1,480.
