The Prime Minister of Denmark has told Donald Trump that it is up to the residents of Greenland to decide on any independence. Trump has said that control of Greenland was an "absolute necessity" and did not rule out using military or economic action such as tariffs against Denmark to make it happen.

Greenland must make its own decisions about independence from Denmark, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told President-elect Trump in a Wednesday phone call. The big picture: Trump, since his first term, has repeatedly floated the idea of the U.S. buying Greenland even though the island's leaders have said it is not for sale.

Trump has not spoken publicly about the call, choosing instead to repost on social media the results of a 2019 poll that found that 68 percent of Greenlanders supported independence from Denmark.

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Wednesday she had spoken on the phone with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and told him that it is up to Greenland itself to decide on any independence.

As President-elect Donald Trump continues to voice his renewed interest in purchasing Greenland as a territory of the United States, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen shared a message for him: “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.”
