The Marines and the National Guard personnel deployed amid the protests in to Los Angeles will operate under the same rules of force and will not be engaging crowds, according to two U.S. officials.

Los Angeles residents and experts say that the National Guard's presence in Los Angeles in response to immigration protests is reminiscent of a longstanding dynamic in the state and around the country.

Experts say it’s highly unusual for a president to call up the National Guard when the governor of a state objects. And Newsom is strongly in opposition.
