Netflix beat Wall Street’s expectations on both earnings and revenue, and added 35 million paid subscribers year-over-year, sending shares of the streaming giant up in after-hours trading.

The platform’s total subscriber count is expected to hit nearly 282 million in the latest quarter, a jump from last year’s 247 million

Netflix is due to report third-quarter earnings after the closing bell on Thursday. Wall Street will be focused on subscriber trends and momentum for the advertising tier — as well as the prospect of price increases in the near future.

Netflix on Thursday reported that its subscriber growth slowed dramatically during the summer, a sign the huge gains from the video-streaming service’s crackdown on freeloading viewers is tapering off.

Revenue and operating margins continued to improve in the third quarter as subscriber growth slowed, a sign of the company’s success in pivoting toward prioritizing profitability over growth.

Netflix is starting to raise prices in some countries, as growth spurred by its crackdown on password sharing starts to fade. The company told investors on Thursday that it was "working to improve our monetization by refining our plans and pricing" and had already increased prices over the last month.

The question of whether the company plans to up the prices of its streaming subscriptions in the future has been raised yet again as Netflix’s soon-to-be-released third-quarter results approach.
