Hong Kong rolled out the red carpet Thursday to receive two giant pandas gifted by the Chinese government to mark 75 years of Communist Party rule, part of a citywide push by authorities to deepen patriotism.

In September, Beijing unveiled a raft of monetary stimulus packages, including forced interest rate cuts and lower down payments of homebuyers to boost the economy. Later, the southern city of Guangzhou lifted all home purchase restrictions, while both Shanghai and Shenzhen revealed plans to ease key buying curbs.

A rally in onshore Chinese stocks on their return from a week-long holiday cooled as traders questioned Beijing’s resolve to add more stimulus. Shares in Hong Kong tumbled.
