Founded by Methodists and Quakers in the present-day town of Trinity in 1838, the school moved to Durham 54 years later in 1892. In 1924, tobacco and electric power industrialist James Buchanan Duke, a year before his death, established the Duke Endowment and the collegiate institution changed its name to honor his deceased father, Washington Duke, the principal founder of a tobacco manufacturer in 1865, that later became merged into the conglomerate American Tobacco Company in 1890.
